Paeonies are my kind of flower.
They give maximum effect for minimum effort.
They prefer to be left alone.
No pruning, no staking, no dividing.
I like that in a plant.
They have fabulous names such as
Sarah Bernhardt and Bowl of Beauty and Duchesse de Nemours.
This year the paeonies are indecently large.
A felicitous combination of sunshine, rain and still air
has produced a pleasure of floating tutus.
When I have a mansion I will have a walled garden full of paeonies but until then I will continue to squeeze a new variety into my tiny garden every autumn.
And think about next summer.
