Gardenia

The fragrance of Gardenia is as heavy as velvet;

it settles luxuriously in the air

and drapes in exotic folds around you.

When I was a little girl my mother wore Jungle Gardenia perfume.
Just now I can picture the scent. And I can see her putting it on.
I had forgotten.

It's a scent that reminds me of my mother too. We once lived in a house whose garden was full of gardenias. She would pick a bloom each morning and put it in her bathroom.

Evocative stuff, scent.

These are the most amazing photographs. So lush and exotic, just like the flower. K x

And is one of my very, very, very favourite flowers. Thankyou for putting such a beautiful scent into words.

gorgeous photos - they perfectly capture the velvet waxiness of the petals. I tried to grow one in a pot once - I learnt I do not have green fingers!

Beautiful photographs. My fragrance of choice is Jo Malone's Vintage Gardenia.

Hi alice,
your photos are so fantastic that i can almost smell the scent... heady!
what is it about scents that make them so evocative? my honeysuckle is flowering at the moment and it has the sweetest prettiest fragrance which always pleasently catches me as i walk through the garden. a lovely time of the year for sniffing don't you think?!

Such a wonderful smell, they remind me of christmas and my mother's garden, a luxurious scent.
Those photos are wonderful, you could get completely lost within them.

I have always loved gardenias and have tried several times to grow them in my house without success.
Your photographs are really beautiful of this lovely flower!

Gardenias were my grandmother's favorite flower. She always had one floating in a Waterford bowl on her bedside table . . .

I could almost smell those.

It's hard to know which is more gorgeous, your words or your pictures. Luckily, I don't have to choose.
