A Fantasy in Blue and White

On the outside Shobdon Church is a little nondescript,
grey and rectangular with a medieval castellated tower.

It is only when you open the door
that you fall in love.

Inside you find a confection of pastel colours
and a riotous assemblage of Gothick fantasy.
It was built by the Bateman family in 1756
in the fashionable Strawberry Hill Gothic style
inspired by Horace Walpole and the 'Committee of Taste'
and care was lavished on every detail.

The technical descriptions hint at the frivolous:
Rococo, ogee pendant arches,
lozenge shaped window panes,
oriental bamboo fretwork,
pineapple mouldings.

The Bateman family sat in the South aisle
on these elegant chairs
warmed by a substantial fireplace.

The servants sat on the other side,
below the pulpit, with no fire,
under the watchful eye of the priest.

The pulpit appears to be suspended in the air
under the extravagant canopy.

Look up the nave to the altar
and admire the barrel vaulting
and fantastical chancel arch.
Look back towards the door
and admire the carved pew ends
and elegant balcony.

What's not to love?

*****

What happens when your camera battery dies...
just before you visit Shobdon Church?
You have to use the camera on your mobile phone.
The photos above are not edited in any way
and are an example of what can be achieved.
The trick is to hold your hand very steady
because the shutter speed is slower.
The main problems are that the colour balance is poor
and composition can be clumsy
especially without a zoom function.
I used to take a lot of photos with my mobile
and so the memory is completely full.
I had to delete five photos to make room for these images
and that made me very careful about the composition.

for Lynn, who has waited impatiently for this post.

Staick House, Eardisland

At the edge of a small village
encircled with orchards
at the height of their blossomy beauty

beside a slow stream,
adrift with reeds,

is a house
enclosed with stranded ivy

where the Sleeping Beauty
sleeps on.

A Vendre

Our good friends Glen and Mary
are thinking of moving to Provence
and so we have identified some potential Real Estate.

Monesties
Admittedly NOT in Provence
but it is close to Orlando (sigh)
and it does have off-street parking.

Carpentras
A business proposition for their retirement.

Bonnieux
So much potential and a village centre location.
What a pity it does not have a roof.

Suzette
A compact maison with extraordinary views
over the principal vineyards of the Rhone valley.
You would not be overlooked.

Les Barroux
MrsM fell for this bijou little home
in a narrow street by the chateau.
You could lean out of the window
and shake hands with your neighbour
on the other side of the street.

Tarascon
A spacious town house with plenty of room
for visitors from England.
Local restaurant only serves hearty peasant food
which could be a deal-breaker.
Especially for MrsM.

I will let you into a secret...
we don’t want them to move at all
because they are wonderful friends
but we mustn’t be selfish and I suppose
there are worse places to visit than Provence.

ChezMagpie-on-Sea

MrsM has been pondering the benefits of a seaside cottage.
She could drink Sea Breeze cocktails
and watch the sun sink over the horizon
and recapture some of her childhood
strolling along the clifftops.

There are so many wonderful properties
....and so many potential pitfalls

MasterM would love the gym
but MrsM thinks
!!Coastal Erosion!!

MissM could roller blade on the prom
but MrsM thinks
!!Rising Sea Levels!!

MrM could sing without anyone hearing
but MrsM thinks
!!Electricity Bills!!

Smugglers Cottage, Pagham, West Sussex
in 1,500 acres of mudflats, lagoons and salt marshes

Poppy would frolic in 1,500 acres of Nature Reserve
but MrsM thinks
!!Mudflats - I don't think so!!

Stylish and Spacious
but MrsM thinks
!!Errr...New Dressing Gown Alert!!

Joan's Cottage, Talland Hill, Polperro

Small but cute in village location
but MrsM thinks
!!This one belongs to Steph!!

Great seaside views; easy access to water
privacy; potential for development.

MrsM thinks
!!Hmmm...possibly...!!

A Real Estate Problem

Here at ChezMagpie we have £2M to spend
and we are looking for ideas

This seems ideal.

Central location
Parking
and a Bedroom.

What more could we ask?

We could get our groceries from Fortnum and Mason
and Poppy could promenade in St. James' Park.

But MrM is not convinced.

He thinks that Poppy might not be happy
in the third floor study/bed.

MrM has a cunning plan.

He suggests this as our main house:

AND this as a city pied a terre:

AND this for seaside holidays:

AND we would still have some spare change for this:

I am tempted to go with his plan.

It is a lot of curtains
and I am sure that the toothpaste
would always be in the wrong place
but I think we could make it work.

Questions for my Estate Agent

This looks like the perfect weekend retreat for MrM.

Many thanks to MissM for drawing it to my attention.
  1. Are there residual obligations to defend Portsmouth Naval Base?

  2. Is that an infinity swimming pool?

  3. Bearing in mind recent legislation - what is the disabled access like?

  4. Are there any restrictions on firing the gun?

  5. Does the planning permission include a garage?

  6. Is the property served by local businesses e.g. Pizza Delivery?

  7. I am concerned that the navigation light might prevent him from going to sleep - are you required to keep it in at night?

Questions for my Estate Agent.

  • What is a palazzina? Is it a small palazzo - because if I am spending €3.6m I 'm not wanting anything small.

  • Why has it got two bedrooms and two kitchens but only one bathroom? Does that mean that I have to cook my own breakfast but I get to share a bath?

  • Artist's studio...I'm worried about the neighbours. What sort of artist is earning enough to buy a palazzina?

  • Is the Gothic Cortile petrol or diesel?

  • As the property has a private boat entrance is there a gondola provided or do I have to bring my own?

  • Is there an agreement covering communal areas? Because otherwise the shared staircase is going to be a deal-breaker.
