MrM and his barber

MasterM has his hair cut by George.

MrM is very loyal to his barber.
For many years he went to see Franco
and Franco ensured that MrM's back and sides were short
(usually regrettably short)
When MasterM was suitably mature (9 years old)
he too went to see Franco.

There were subtle aspects to the whole experience
because Franco has an elderly assistant with a shock of white hair
known affectionately as 'Einstein'
who quite often gets distracted mid-haircut
talking about Italian football
so that the hair outcome is entirely unpredictable.
He also smokes like a train
and standing near him is a respiratory challenge.
MrM and MasterM always used to thank Einstein politely
if he offered to cut their hair
and tell him that they were waiting for Franco.

There is a third barber
who is occasionally in the shop .
He is known as 'The Other Guy'
and he is the best barber of the team
but it is tricky to say to Franco
'I am waiting for The Other Guy'
and so it was entirely luck of the draw.
Sometimes, if MrM was feeling very kind
he would let MasterM have his hair done by The Other Guy
while he had second best with Franco.

When MasterM was younger
he was required to have short hair for school
and so MrsM would take him to see Franco.
She always felt uncomfortable sitting in the chairs
among the tabloid papers
and the football conversations.
She would give MasterM a pound coin before they went in
and at the end he would hand it to Franco,
still hot from being clutched in his hand,
and say, just as his father did,
'Thank you very much, Franco. See you again soon.'

Later, MasterM decided to grow his hair.
Franco was not happy about this;
it was an affront to his professional pride.
MasterM was obliged to walk on the other side of the street
to avoid having a discussion with Franco.

Today MrM had to visit the barbers.
He has been having his hair cut near his office
but has not been able to make the time to visit
the friendly and talented George the Barber.
When he walked into Franco's nothing had changed...
Einstein waved him to a chair
but MrM said that he would wait for Franco.
Franco was delighted to see MrM
and wanted to know everything that he had done
since he was last in the shop.
He was shocked to hear that MasterM was now 19
and travelling in South America.
Who would cut his hair while he was so far away?

MrM tipped Franco generously,
said goodbye to Einstein
and wondered what to say to MrsM
about his seriously short haircut.

Back to the friendly and talented George the Barber next time.

The Ten Commandments

1.
Thou shalt honour MrM
who is the mobile phone coordinator for the Family.
2.
Thou shalt respect thy mobile phone
which is a valuable item.
3.
Thou shalt be awed by MrM's encyclopaedic knowledge
of tariffs and special offers.
4.
Thou shalt attempt to use up thy monthly text allowance.
5.
Thou shalt not under any circumstances
make calls from overseas with thy UK sim card.
6.
Thou shalt not leave thy mobile phone at home.
7.
Thou shalt not lose thy mobile phone
at the bottom of thy handbag.
8.
Thou shalt not drop thy mobile phone
in a supermarket car park.
9.
Thou shalt not delete texts about London Irish
from MrM without reading them.
10.
Thou shalt not laugh uncontrollably
when MrM confesses that
he dropped his new Blackberry in the bath
and when he had secretly dried it out in the airing cupboard
it almost worked.
Except the number 5.

MrM Gets His Revenge

Monday Morning

MrM
"Get Up!
Get UP!
GET UP!!
Do you know what the time is??
It is 7.15"

MrsM leaps out of bed.
It is her first day back at work
and she does not want to be late.

She is very disappointed
that her new alarm clock
(which she bought while MrM was considering bags)
has let her down.

She runs downstairs to the kitchen
where she discovers that...

It is not 7.15am...

It is 6.15am.

She totters back upstairs to bed for half an hour.

(MrM claims that this was an innocent mistake.)

Did I marry the right man?

Look!!

It's a gnome...

throwing a hand grenade...

I wish that he would stop watching
the Military Channel.

The Mystery of Love

A long, long time ago
(twenty six years ago, to be precise)
MrM lived at the top of this staircase.

Behind this door.

The facilities were basic
but he worked hard and played hard
and enjoyed life.

It was a long way up the stairs
when MrsM went to visit
(of course, in those far off days,
she was the lovely MissP)

One day MrM decided to play a trick on her...
he climbed out of the window
with the intention of springing up
to surprise her as she walked past.

But she was late.
And his fingers got tired
And so he fell down onto the ledge.
And had to cry for help.

MasterM is mystified.
"But WHY would you do that?" he asks

MrM is unrepentant
"I did it to make your mother laugh."
And the memory of that day still makes me laugh
Twenty six years later.

MrM - my personal travel assistant

MrM is a good person to go on holiday with.
He organises everything impeccably.
(Admittedly, there was a major security alert
when an illegal penknife was found in his suitcase
but let’s pass over that quickly)

He can speak immaculate French.
(Although, strangely, in shops he becomes very inarticulate)

He does all the driving which is very restful for MrsM
(Unless it is reversing which he doesn’t enjoy.
Please let’s not talk about that)

He can give guided tours to archaeological sites
(Assisted only by his EXTENSIVE selection of guide books.)

He knows how to relax.
(Note the communication strategy...
In Case of Emergency)

He is greeted personally
by the man in charge of the Taxi queue
when we return to St. Pancras late at night.
(An amazing end to a wonderful holiday)

*****
We returned last night from two weeks in France.
After a couple of nights in Paris
we travelled south on the train
and then drove across the heart of France to Avignon
where we had a tiny gite surrounded by water.

It took a little while
before I wanted to start taking photographs again
but I made myself keep pressing the shutter.

I hope that you will enjoy seeing
some of the things that we saw on the way.

MrM, SuperDad

There is only one person in ChezMagpie
who can help MissM prepare for her Ancient Greek exam
and it is not MrsM.

In our family we divide labour according to ability:
MrM can scan Homer
and MrsM can chop carrots.

So that is what we do.

*****

MissM has just phoned to say
that she has finished her 21st and last exam.
Party poppers and hugs all round.
Hurray!!!

MrM, Sous-Chef

MrM is preparing strawberries for Sunday lunch.

MrM
I have done these strawberries EXTREMELY well.
I think I could get into
the whole food preparation thing.

Doubtful silence from MrsM

MrM
I could probably manage carrots.

MasterM
Carrots!
Are you mad?
You would need to use the potato peeler.

MrM
Don't you think I could manage a peeler yet?
What do you think I could do?

MrsM
Bananas...

Possibly...

MasterM
To be fair, he is not bad at oranges...

Bank Holiday Chores

MrM polishing the Player of the Season Trophy
in his capacity as
Important Person in the London Irish Supporters' Club.

Please note how confident he is
with his inner Cath Kidston

In the past five days
AOL has been blocking all email from Blogger and GMail.
It is not just a problem with my account
but it has created problems for me responding to comments.
I apologise.
I hope that the power struggle between AOL and Google
will be resolved quickly
but in the meantime I have transferred my blog email to
chezmagpie@gmail.com

******

Today is a National Holiday
but MrM and I have to go St. Pancras
to monitor the performance of the Champagne Bar.

No slacking allowed here at Chez Magpie.

MrM - Computer Guru

Shutter Sisters is one of my favourite blogs. It has wonderful photographs, interesting perspectives on photography and thoughtful comments.

This post talks about backing up your photographs on a regular basis to avoid catastrophic loss if your computer crashes.

I am very fortunate because MrM is conscientious about this and our computer is backed up regularly to an external hard drive.

MasterM knows what it is like to lose your photographs because his laptop crashed with a whole summer of photographs from South Africa irretrievably gone. He had backed them up to his iPod but they were saved as thumbnails and the retrieved images were very low resolution.

Fortunately, MrM had made a CD with a selection of the best photographs to circulate to grandparents. Wonderful MrM saves the day - again.

I have decided that I am going to print off the best of my photographs from 2007 and make an album. I have bought the album - now all I need to do is stick in the photographs.

I may be gone a little while.

Shopping with MrM

MrM is not into Retail Therapy.
His birthday treat to me was to walk around the shops of Dublin
and attempt to look interested.

He smiled wanly when shown shoes
and agreed in a mystified way that
Thinning Hair Must be Miserable.

I really appreciated this
because he would normally bite off his right arm
rather than waste time looking at clothes.
He was doing it because he wanted me to be happy.

I realised that he was a bit out of his depth
in the Kitchen Department of Brown Thomas
when he said in awed tones
"What IS it?"
(It's an ironing board, MrM)

So we hurried along to a nearby bookshop
for Rest and Recuperation.

And then checked out the opportunities
for buying keyrings with grass in.
MrM was impressed.

When he had recovered from the stresses
of the modern Retail Environment
we went to The Silver Shop in the Powerscourt Centre
to choose my birthday present.

Luckily, I saw what I wanted immediately.

Thank you MrM
xxx

A Soundtrack for V-Day

MissM complains that my ability
to listen to the same song
over and over again
goes beyond the limit of human endurance.

But that is what I do...
when I find something I like,
I stick with it.

Happy V-Day, MrM.

Die, Monster, Die!

or
The Damage We Do To Our Children

When MrM was young

which was a long time ago

his parents went out for the evening
leaving him in charge of his brother and sister.
They all decided to watch the television.

In those days the television was colour
but there were only three channels.
Imagine!

To their delight there was a horror film on:
starring Boris Karloff.

They watched, agog,
because they were not allowed to see horror films.

And then...

just as Mervin the Butler

dropped

DEAD

their mother came into the room
and switched off the television.

And so they did not see the end.

And
because there were no videos or DVDs
in those far off days
Imagine!

They NEVER DISCOVERED
who killed Mervin the Butler.

It was very damaging for young minds
and MrM has often referred to it
as an example of his deprived upbringing.

Of course, MrsM was much more deprived
BECAUSE SHE HAD NO TELEVISION AT ALL
but she doesn't brag about it.

C'mon You Irish!!

I sometimes wonder
if we did something wrong in a past life.

It must have been bad
if the punishment was to support London Irish in this life.

London Irish specialise in turning victory into defeat
as their fans look on in disbelief.

Today the fog is so bad
that we cannot see the other side of the pitch
but this does not stop MrM complaining:

"Offside"

"Forward Pass"

"That throw is not STRAIGHT"

"What is the touch judge THINKING??"

The fog gets worse.
We cannot see the middle of the pitch.

And then, incredibly, we win.
How did that happen?
Apparently, Sailosi Tagicakibau scored a try.

MrM turns to his friend.
"Never in Doubt"
they agree.

I think it is time for a pint of Guinness.

Cuff Links

When you have the benefit of
a Classical Education
it can be a bit of a shock to realise
that not everybody knows that
XL
means
40

An Evening Out With MrM

MrM is giving me a tour of St. Pancras.

We look at the retail units

and the statue of Sir John Betjeman.

The Biggest Advent Calendar in the World has no numbers
but I am assured
there will be a man with a ladder and a Letraset tonight .

We check out the Champagne Bar

and watch the trains go by.

All around us people are saying
'Wonderful'; 'Amazing'; 'Fantastic'

This is his station and MrM is very proud.

And I am so very proud of him.

*****

MrM is part of the management team.
It is a HUGE project
which is linked to the Channel Tunnel, High Speed rail link, 2012 Olympics
and regeneration of a massive area of East London.

However, it is the restoration of this beautiful station
that everyone involved feels so passionately about.
It has taken ten years but it was worth it.
So many people involved and all of them feel it is their station!

Coming Up Smelling of Roses

A sad tale with a happy ending

One year ago MrM was offered a ticket to the World Cup Final.
He assumed that he would be watching
South Africa v New Zealand
But he said yes.

Four months ago he booked the Eurostar to get to Paris
And the hotel to stay in Paris
And the restaurant to eat in Paris.

One week ago he realised that he would be watching
England v South Africa

MrM was very, very excited.

He phoned his VERY RELIABLE FRIEND
and his VRF said
'The tickets will arrive on Wednesday'
and on Wednesday his VRF said
'We will collect the tickets on Friday'
and on Friday his VRF said
'There are no tickets'

MrM was very, very disappointed.

He spoke to his lawyer.
MrM's lawyer said
'I will fix your VRF and get you some tickets'
Which he did.

So now MrM and his lawyer are on the Eurostar
drinking champagne.

And tomorrow they will meet
our wonderful friends, Glen and Mary
and MasterM's South African friends
and celebrate one team or the other.

It should be a great weekend.

The Wilder Shores of Accountancy

MrM has a lot on his mind.

The item at the top of his list at work is "Christmas Decorations"
and more specifically, "Santa's Grotto".

MrM is an accountant
and he has just been reviewing the budget of "Santa's Grotto"
and it will cost...
well, let's just say that there are
an uncomfortable number of noughts at the end.

What worries him tonight
is the prospect of sitting down tomorrow
in a Board Meeting and beginning:

"Item 2. Santa's Grotto
I would like to discuss the possibility of rationalisation.
How many elves does Santa need?
Can he downsize to pixies?
Can he manage with just one reindeer?
Have we factored in his carbon footprint?
Can we outsource the letter delivery?
Does Santa have bonus expectations?"

It gets worse
because MrM's boss is fully committed
to the whole Santa concept
so the discussion will have to be done
as a cost/benefit analysis.

It is going to be a difficult meeting.

p.s. if you know where MrM works
I would be soooo grateful
if you would not spill the beans
because being dismissed for a breach of confidentiality
about "Santa's Grotto"
is not going to look good on the CV.
