A long, long time ago
(twenty six years ago, to be precise)
MrM lived at the top of this staircase.
Behind this door.
The facilities were basic
but he worked hard and played hard
and enjoyed life.
It was a long way up the stairs
when MrsM went to visit
(of course, in those far off days,
she was the lovely MissP)
One day MrM decided to play a trick on her...
he climbed out of the window
with the intention of springing up
to surprise her as she walked past.
But she was late.
And his fingers got tired
And so he fell down onto the ledge.
And had to cry for help.
MasterM is mystified.
"But WHY would you do that?" he asks
MrM is unrepentant
"I did it to make your mother laugh."
And the memory of that day still makes me laugh
Twenty six years later.

Hmmm, this story is familiar as K spent some time on a ledge to surprise me too, once, a long time ago.
I think Mr. M. and K have some things in common...
Lovely story --- and I'm glad he didn't fall off that ledge...
N.
There is something utterly wonderful about a man that will do crazy things to make his wife laugh
So sweet that laughter is.
Aw, that was the most life-affirming story EVER. I had to drag my Better Half to the computer to see it. And it reminded me of a time when he raced to hide behind a building so he could jump out and wave a handmade sign at me as I walked past. Neither of us remembers what the sign said, mind you -- just something to cheer me up. And cheer me it still does.
P.S. Your dorm was way cooler than any of mine...
MrM would like to point out that he would happily do the same again now but might have a little more difficulty hauling himself back in. Some things are best left to posterity.
I was shocked to discover by the way that after nearly 30 years that all the rooms had been renumbered so it was now different. Plus ca change ...
I do believe that Master M will remain mystified by such actions until he finds his very own Miss P for keeps :o)
Oh, the things we do for laughs...and love.
One day Master M will understand and be prepared to do the same. What a lovely story Alice.
your Mr M is quite the romantic isn't he!
Teehee. They always want the world to think they are sensible but we know really ;-)
Awwwww, that is a lovely story. Now, own up, were you hiding round the corner waiting to see how long he could hang on. No?
I remember having those huge communal bathrooms in college too. Eeeek!
Mr DC still delights in making me laugh by shoving me into hedges as we pass - he calls it 'hedgucation' and has been doing it for 21 years. He's starting to do it to the girls now too.
Oh I love your story. How romantic. And for MasterM to see were it all took place. That's the best.
That's EXACTLY the sort of young man I hope my daughter will meet one day - one who wants to see her smile and hear her laugh.
Oh, and I think Master M knew EXACTLY why his father did that at the time, and I have no doubt that he will one do something similar to his own love.
Gosh, I seem to be very opinionated in today's comment box. Well...it is a very powerful post!
And this was beautiful (and romantic) too.
How is the university choosing going?
Oh!
Funny that Mr M is mystified . . .
I remember living in a beautiful big old victorian house with balconys at evey bedroom window when was a student. A young man who was wooing me at the time climbed onto my balcony one night and stucky a piece of A4 paper at the window saying 'my love is yours' - how romantic, when I woke to see it the next morning I gave him my heart. Sadly the great romantic didnt stay around for long and soon returned to Ireland never to be seen again, taking my heart with him. Luckily Mr L came into my life and carefully repaired the broken heart..............
Such a wonderful story! Very impressed with Mr M and the lengths he would go to for the lovely Miss P :) K x
Such a lovely story and how wonderful that it still makes you laugh.
Great story - it is making me laugh too.
